Made my decision...

December 4, 2008

Wow, what a week!

So, after 9 years of being a stay-at-home mom, I have made a decision..I am finally pursuing a passion I have had for as long as I can remember..photography. I am feeling very excited..sometimes a twinge of nervousness..but I suppose that's all normal with anything new.

But photography is not really new for me. I have always loved it and admired it. I am drawn to my photographer friends and will peruse all their photos, study them and admire them.

Looking back, waayy back, I think I began to become addicted to photography when I got my first camera as an elementary school graduation gift. Can't remember the brand name or anything, just remember that it was red and looked like a flat little box. I even took time to smell the camera (yep, smell it) thought it SMELLED good. I loved it and guarded it with my life..kept it in close proximity to me at all times and well guarded from my 2 younger "pesky" and nosy brothers. Little did I know how great my brothers were to become in photography themselves and how much I would look at their photos in admiration.

My brother Joe had a passion for photography. We had a family photographer..he would always carry his heavy, SLR non-digital camera around his neck and snap photos of us. He inherited that camera as a gift from his grandfather-in-law and loved that baby. He downloaded the original manual and learned how to use it all on his own...he practiced on my boys. What great photos I have of those chubby little faces thanks to Joe! Joe passed away in August 2007 at only 31 years of age. His photographs are his legacy ~ a testament of his love and adoration for his nephews. A declaration of his love for the art of photography.

I guess by pursuing photography, I am, in a way, also fulfilling a dream my brother had, filling a gap, though never his shoes. He paved the way, and I'll want to finish paving it in honour of him.

My youngest brother Frank is great with camera in hand as well. He's got the 'eye'. Frank was always an artist, and his abilities are portrayed in every shot he takes. He is expecting his first baby in February 2009; he will be a very busy man. But he plans to take some workshops with me in spring/summer of 09.

So back to this week, I've registered for my class at Dundas Valley School of Art. I've purchased a wide angle lens, plus 3 filters and adapter ring for my Fuji finepix S5200 digital. Not an SLR digital yet, but that's coming. I am also registering for a couple of weekend courses with Trina Koster in Guelph, ON in February. So, I'm on my way.

  3. I'm very proud of you and Joe would be to. Pictures, photography is one of the most important "things" in life. Because once it's all said and done all you have left are your memories and the pictures. Pictures are so important because oftentimes they trigger those memories that we haven't thought about in years, they are a link to our past. You can see so much in a photo...more than what is just there. Good for you Ro!
