Tips on how to have a Green Wedding...

Recently, I was flipping through an issue of Bridal Confidential, a London/St.Thomas bridal magazine. Bridal Confidential I came across an interesting article about how to plan a green wedding..not so much in a green colour scheme, but rather, an environmentally-friendly one! :D Here a few tips I discovered and thought I might share! Then you will see some pics I took of a wedding I shot a few short weeks ago, Jenny & Thomas', who I feel made some cool wedding choices that reflect what I'm about to discuss!

Tip #1 - reduce your fuel consumption, as well as your guests' fuel consumption by choosing ceremony and reception venues that are close in proximity. Book guests into the same place as your reception venue or as nearby as possible to it.

Tip #2 - Use local vendors and facilities. Not only will you have to drive less, but your wedding vendors, caterers, florists etc. etc. etc. will have less of drive as well. Again, limiting gas consumption.

Tip #3 - Your wedding dinner can be made from entirely local foods. Also, your wedding flowers can be ones that are locally grown or ones that are seasonal at the time of your wedding.

Tip #4 - Instead of throwing rice or confetti, choose flower petals. Prettier in pictures too :D

Tip #5 - Ask whoever is responsible for clean up after your reception if they recycle. Request that they do so.

These tips are simple and easy. Hope it helps and gives you a few ideas to implement when planning your day.

Finally, just want to share some pics I took from Jenny & Thomas' wedding which ties in with the whole environmental theme! Jenny created her own bouquets - they were beautiful and yet simple, and she used local, seasonal wildflowers. The piece de resistance though, were the invitations...I absolutely loved them! They were made with handmade, recycled paper. In the paper, there are seeds - plant the whole invitation with a layer of dirt in the springtime, water regularly and watch the blossoms bloom!! What a great idea! And such a beautiful, natural look to them as well!

Great ideas hey?? I thought so ;)

I know a great cake decorator!!

A few weeks ago, when shooting Jenna and Jamie's wedding, I was surprised to know that the cake decorator responsible for the absolutely beautiful and delicious wedding cake was none other than my mom's friend and former workmate, Barbara. Barbara is a fun-loving and talented wedding cake decorator and designer, who will take the time to sit down with you and discuss your vision of the perfect wedding cake! When I used to visit my mom at work, (she worked at a bakery for many years alongside Barb), I would marvel at Barb's creations. Her cakes are like works of art, and she truly loves what she does! Without further ado, may I recommend Classic Creations by Barbara to you if you are considering a wedding cake in the near future? Not only will it be beautiful on the outside, but delicious through and through!

Vintage Wedding Rings

Further to yesterday's blog about vintage wedding dresses and thanks to Thrift Store Junkie :), I would not only like to post yet another website to view beautiful bridal gowns and vintage dresses, but would like to introduce you to another vintage idea! So you are going vintage with the gown, why not go vintage with the ring too?! Check out this site- www.vintage-wedding- rings.com to view some gorgeous rings, rich in design and history!

Why go vintage for a wedding ring? Well as this site brings out, and in my opinion as well, a vintage ring can be symbolic with timelessness and enduring love. Perfect for the sentimental couple, a vintage ring is classic, yet unique. A vintage ring stands out because it is different. Try family heirlooms ~ this site has suggestions on ways to personalize your heirloom ring to make it your very own.

Finding a Vintage Wedding Dress

Hey'all! Hope you all took some time to check out my new website, www.freespiritphoto.ca As you see, I not only photograph families, children and personal portraits, but I specialize in engagement/weddings photographs.

Part of my goal as a wedding photographer is not only to document your day in a beautiful way that you will cherish forever, but to be able to help out any way I can in planning your day. I hold the camera, sure, but I also want to share cool ideas with you as you plan your big day together- your first day as husband and wife! With that in mind, I plan to build a section of my blog based on ideas, tips and neat-o wedding websites for the bride and groom-to-be. I also plan on scavenging out some amazing people/businesses in my local area to post about..(have a few in mind already!) Wedding planning is exciting, but at times, challenging and I hope I can provide some insight any way I can!

So, without further adieu, my first segment in this series of topics is about what every girl dreams about and what every woman will wear on the big day - the wedding dress. Specifically, vintage wedding dresses. As many are aware already, I am a LOVER of all things vintage. So, when I did my research on this topic, I was pretty darn excited :D Found a few tips on how to find that perfect vintage wedding dress, for the vintage vixen such as myself!

Let's start with the rules for buying a vintage wedding dress.

1.) Be wary of stains or major repairs - Remember that a 20 year + old stain is a pretty stubborn one! And vintage fabric is very hard to match. A seamstress can make most repairs, but this can get pretty costly. Quality is key here.

2.) Watch for fabric quality. Even though dress may have only been worn once, fabrics can deteriorate and weaken with time - be sure to stretch the fabric and test it a bit. Notice any weakening. A good seamstress can fix, but again this all costs more moolah.

3.) Make sure you know and respect your budget - good advice for buying any bridal gown.

4.) You will not wear your regular size in a vintage dress. Dress sizes have changed considerably over the years. Have your measurements on hand and ready - bust, waist, hips.

5.) Consider buying or making a reproduction. Sites like

Isadora's
specialize in reproduction dresses from the 40s and 50s. Other sites to try: Vintage Vixen (haha!), and my (pricey) favourite The Frock. I LOVE the flapper styles!!

Good with a sewing machine or know someone who is? Try Old Patterns.

Pricey maybe, but if you're looking for quality and the real deal, this is the site to check out!
