I recently had a photo assignment about exploring depth of field in a photograph. We were to photograph three items in a line to show two different depths of field: one with all three items in focus, and the other with only the middle item in focus and the other two out of focus.
So the question was..what do I shoot? My mind first went to my boys, since I have three, and I need three "items" to photograph. So I lined them up and tried to have them stand still so I could focus on setting my apertures and producing the right photos. Lots of laughs, but no success.
Tried objects around the house, shoes, picture frames, dominoes(?). Nah.
Thought of pool balls on a pool table. Cool concept, but I don't own a pool table and don't know anyone who does..and I wasn't too keen on the idea of walking into a bar, pool hall or bowling alley, camera in hand..aside from the fact I was now running out of time!
My final idea occurred to me as I drove by Hamilton Cemetary across from Dundurn Castle. I pulled in and took a stroll..it is a gorgeous, peaceful place. I love reading old tombstones and imagining the lives of the people there..wondering what they did, how they came to their eventuality. I don't know, some may find it morbid? but I find it reflective. I then saw three very old, identical little tombstones. Three little ones, probably siblings. I stood there and read their tombstones and cleaned up the area around them. It broke my heart. I felt this was the shot to take.
I was very happy with the results, and apparently so was my instructor! Thanks to these three little people. Brought them some fresh flowers just the other day. :)
Here are the 2 final photos I submitted, followed by trial run with my little critters.
Later! R..
